Is it safe to be in Ecuador .
Ecuador is a microcosm of the communities in South America . You will find all elements of a developing nation: Political changes, community organizations and demonstrations, poverty and crime. However it is a fact that all these changes would normally happen in a smooth, non-violent manner. The type of crime in the big cities is based on robberies that will take place in very well identified areas of the cities. There is no racial or ethnic related violence in Ecuador . There is no rejection to the presence of foreigners, neither there is any evidence of conflicts with any other country. There is no terrorism in Ecuador at all. There is no guerrilla activity in our territory either.
Who can participate in Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador programs?
Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador programs are open and available for a wide variety of individuals: workers in a variety of fields, educators, technicians, advisors, educators, high school students, college and university students, graduates, professionals, retires and veterans. In general, these programs are for people who has the time and will to share what they know with others.

What level of Spanish do I need?
No previous Spanish speaking experience is required, however the more Spanish language the participant understands, the wider variety of volunteering options she/he has. We offer Spanish classes for all levels from beginners to advanced, Conversation fluency, writing, and General Readings.
What are the basic requirements for participation in Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador programs?
They differ with each program. However, the most basic and important requirements are: to be sociable, open minded, flexible, dynamic, eager to learn and share.
When can I start?
Our programs are available all year round. The start date is up to you. You may even combine programs.
What is the length of the programs?
They could be as short as 9 days up to a year or more.
What hours should I expect to work?
You are expected to work at least 16 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, but it is up to you and your level of commitment to increase that time or to vary the days.
Do I get a certificate for the Spanish course, internship or volunteer after their completion?
Definitely yes. All institutions involved in the programs are accredited and legally established in Ecuador , therefore you will get a valid certificate for courses and/or volunteer work you do.
Are the programs paid or unpaid?
Due to the nature of our network, all internships are unpaid. Eventually some agencies will offer stipends for transportation and/or food, but it is not guaranteed.
Why do I have to pay to volunteer or interning?
Our organization needs to set up a very well trained team of professionals to assist interns and volunteers. In addition we provide very close mentoring and supervision. Furthermore some funds are used for donations to the agencies or purchasing of materials and supplies for specific tasks the interns perform.
How would I be able to get Visa?
Ecuador welcomes tourists and travelers from every country. Citizens of the United States , Canada and most European countries, traveling to Ecuador for less than 90days do not require visa to enter. For longer programs we will send you the necessary documentation to obtain a student visa or a cultural exchange visa at the Ecuadorean diplomatic representation in your country.
Will I be able to take excursions in addition to the program?
Yes you can take short and long term excursions to:
The Andes Mountains , Northern lagoon area, The equator line, Quito (the capital city), the Southern and Central Mountains , Indian Markets, El Cajas National Park, Inca ruins, The Amazonian Basin, The Ruta del Sol, and the Galapagos Islands . You have the option to take these excursions through our department of Tourism development and research, or any other travelling provider of your choice. We will always offer the opportunity for you to travel with one of our experienced professionals or faculty member.
