Welcome to the
SCHOOL OF TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
To prepare professional translators and interpreters with ethical principles and a solid academic background, with the skills and expertise to perform in the local, regional and international market and act professionally, according to international standars and expectations.

   Dear Prospective Student,

If you are an international person and like to use your foreign language skills and your knowledge of other cultures, consider a career in translation and interpretation. Translation and interpretation careers are challenging and exciting as well as lucrative.

Plus, you can practice them anywhere in the world. You can also enhance your studies and knowledge combining a series of minors that will make you even more marketable.

As the concept of the Global Village becomes more and more tangible, more people across the world need to communicate to do business, to negotiate, to have exchanges, to learn and to share experiences. Businessmen, scientists, technicians, experts, as well as educators need to communicate through professional translators and interpreters: remember they don't have time to learn a language overnight, not even in one year. Learning a language cannot be improvised. It takes years to build those skills. That means they need to hire an expert. Therefore, if you are a natural intercultural communicator and are fluent in two or more languages you can be that professional person to bridge the gaps across languages and cultures.

In fact, you have problably already acquired 50% of what it takes to become a translator or an interpreter. Have you studied languages since early childhood?... Have you lived and travelled abroad?... Are you fluent in English and Spanish?... Are you well-read?.. Do you like to research and study?... Are you curious about new technologies and discoveries?... Are you interested in the affairs of the world? If you answered "yes" to any three of these questions a career in TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION is the door to your success.

Please come see us and we'll give you some more interesting information!

Sincerely,
Monica D. Reynoso-Gaute, M.A.

Do I have a future as a T&I professional?

If you are competent in English and in Spanish, have a formal training and have a business mind you will be able to develop a successful career in t&i.

Is there work for me out there? What are the market's needs in terms of translation and interpreting services?

Businessmen and women, negotiators, politicians, marketeers, researchers, professionals (lawyers, engineers, medical doctors) all need some kind of professional interpreting or translating services. In this day and age, not only businesses but also indepedent professionals are expected to maintain bilingual websites. Government also needs to publish official announcements in foreign languages for purposes of business, tourism, marketing, etc.

The market needs you... and Y ou need to be proactive, educate clients, go the extra mile, deliver total quality and total service.

What does it take to become a professional translator & interpreter?

You need to be fluent in at least 2 strong languages: your mother tongue (language "A") and an active (near native level "B" language) foreign language. This means oral and written skills. To become a professional you must be aware that you need to be ethical, competitive, deliver the best.
Hard work, many hours of practice, research, reading, dedication, self-critique, self analysis, self observation, read a daily a day, a monthly a month, a weekly a week in all your different languages. That is the golden rule. You also need technology.

What do I need to become an interpreter?

Apart fi'om mastery oftwo languages, you must know/understand two or more different cultures. Having lived, travelled or studied abroad is very important. Interpreters must have excellent public speaking skills and great memory skills. Teamwork is very important: you need good people skills.

What do T&I people do?

Typically, they are involved in many activities within their profession or field of expertise. They are always preparing for the "next job."
They are not "9-5" people. Their schedules are very crazy. So me projects demand that you work round, the clock to meet the deadlines.

hey must take care ofthe business side oftheir profession: dealing with clients, billing, collecting, advertising, as well as doing the job and delivering total quality. They also need to understand the latest technologies.

What is life like as a T&I professional?

Very exciting! It can be very challenging in many ways. Time management is ofthe essence. Always obsessed with delivering total quality.
